Public Hearing of the European Economic and Social Committee on the opinion on “The New EC Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change”

On 15/3 Prof. Phoebe Koundouri participated at the Public Hearing of the European Economic and Social Committee on the opinion on “The New EC Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change”, in her capacity as an expert to the rapporteur (Dimitris Dimitriadis). The European Commission adopted a new EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change on 24 February 2021. The new strategy sets out how the European Union can adapt to the impacts of climate change and become climate resilient by 2050. Prof. Koundouri highlighted the need for climate policies to combine mitigation and adaptation strategies, and that the economic benefits of adaptation programmes, such as early warning systems, making infrastructure resilient, improving dryland agriculture, managing water resources, exceed costs by five to ten times.
