Opening Lecture of the Final Phase of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development 2022

On June 13, the opening lecture of the Phase 3 of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development was held at Santa Chiara Lab – University of Siena. Enrico Giovannini, Minister of Infrastructures and Sustainable Mobility, highlighted in the lecture the importance of finding solutions through interdisciplinary studies and social and political innovation for a sustainable path.

The Siena International School on Sustainable Development 2022 returns on campus on Monday, 13 June, at Santa Chiara Lab – University of Siena, higher education for skills in key areas of sustainable development, dedicated to decarbonization. Together with the international experts and teachers, including the Italian Minister Enrico Giovannini and Professor Jeffrey Sachs, economist at Columbia University, 30 participants selected for the final phase of the School will be the game changers for carbon neutrality.
2022 Sustainable Development Report

Since 2015, the Sustainable Development Report provides the most up-to-date data to track and rank the performance of all UN member states on the SDGs. The report was written by a group of independent experts at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), led by its President, Prof. Jeffrey Sachs. A global plan to finance the UN Sustainable Development Goals is urgently needed, according to the report, and multiple and simultaneous international crises have halted progress on the universal goals adopted by all UN member countries during the historic 2015 summit.
Decarbonizing Russia: Leapfrogging from Fossil Fuel to Hydrogen

In a world where climate policy increasingly requires the radical reduction of emissions wherever possible, the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), the co-host institution of SDSN Russia, explores a different approach to the decarbonization of the Russian economy. According to the analysis of the RANEPA, the Russian economy can achieve 100% decarbonization using a wide range of feasible combinations of wind and solar power generation coupled with green hydrogen production.

Held on May 20, the online event of SDSN Europe “The SDGs in Times of Crises”, organized in the framework of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development, discussed the importance of focusing on the SDGs in times of multiple crises and global challenges.
Energy Transition, costs and opportunities: Highlights from the Lecture by Stefano Besseghini

Stefano Basseghini, President of the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA), held the tenth lesson of phase 2 of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development about “Energy Transition: costs and opportunities”. Stefano Basseghini discussed current energy strategies for achieving decarbonization and decentralization, as well as the ARERA’s role in regulating service distribution.
Climate transition as a driver for change: Highlights from the Lecture by Jos Delbeke

Jos Delbeke, EIB Climate Chair, held the ninth lesson of phase 2 of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development about “Climate transition as a driver for change”. He emphasized the importance of adopting various approaches to achieve the decarbonisation targets, presenting the exemplary measures taken by the EU.
Financing the Joint Implementation of Agenda 2030 and the European Green Deal

On May 3rd 2022, SDSN’s European Green Deal Senior Working Group launched the second annual report, entitled ‘Financing the Joint Implementation of the SDGs and the European Green Deal’. The report provides an overview of the EU policies published since 2020 in support of the implementation of the European Green Deal and explores the financial implications of the Joint Implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the European Green Deal, emphasizing the need for private financial flows to be directed towards sustainable projects and activities.

On May 3rd, the SDSN’s Senior Working Group on the European Green Deal launched their 2nd Annual Report, “Financing the Transformations for the Joint Implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the European Green Deal”. This event featured the launch of the 2nd report from the SDSN Senior Working Group on the European Green Deal highlighting policy advancements and sustainable finance, where the main co-authors presented the results of the report, followed by an open discussion and elaboration on the key messages by a panel of invited speakers consisting of top academics and politicians.

Angelo Riccaboni, School director, Co-Chair of the SDSN Europe, held the eighth lesson of the phase 2 of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development about “The Grammar of Sustainability, the alignment of agrifood companies to SDGs”. He emphasized the reduction of emissions, innovation adoption, and better measurement tools for sustainability for the transformation of the food system.
