SUMMARY:Launch of the 2021 Europe Sustainable Development Report
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will feature the launch of the 2021 Europe Sustainable Development Report (3rd edition) prepared by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) in partnership with SDSN Europe and the Institute for a European Environmental Policy (IEEP). The report co-designed with civil society\, provides an overview of the European Union performance and trajectories on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by all UN Member States in 2015. It includes detailed country profiles for all EU Member States and partner countries – including for the first time EU candidate countries. This year’s edition includes two thematic chapters: The EU Recovery and the SDGs; and Transforming the Agri-Food Sector for Achieving the SDGs. As for previous editions\, the report underlines SDGs priorities inside the EU but also the need to leverage diplomacy and to address negative spillovers embodied into unsustainable supply chains in order to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs and Paris Climate Agreement. This event will bring together various experts and practitioners to discuss key priorities and transformations to achieve the SDGs inside and outside the EU and how to get it done in the face of the pandemic.

SUMMARY:Implementing the European Green Deal Through Transformational Change: A review of EU Climate Action through the Lens of the "Six Transformations"
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Enel Foundation will present their study on how to effectively implement the European Green Deal in full consistency with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, and will show the successful case study of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan. \nTo live up to the ambition of tackling the urgent climate and environmental crisis\, while pursuing economic growth and respecting the Leave No One Behind principle\, the European Green Deal should be implemented according to a holistic and cross-sectoral pattern in deep synergy with the SDGs policies. Adopting the Six Transformations approach\, developed among others by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs in 2019\, aimed at providing a model for policymakers to address multiple SDGs while minimizing potential trade-offs\, this study put forward policy recommendations to ensure that the European Green Deal is applied in full coherence with the SDGs. \nThe case study of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan shows how energy and climate action can be successfully operationalised within the Six Transformation framework and in line with the European Green Deal’s objectives. In fact\, if properly implemented\, the Mission of the “Green Revolution and Ecological Transition” in the Plan will have manifold positive spill-over effects in several policy fields\, such as a net increase in jobs in the energy sector. Finally\, the Italian example can guide other countries wishing to develop a holistic strategy aligned with multiple objectives and goals.

SUMMARY:The EU’s Plan towards the Future We Want: Fireside Chat on the European Green Deal
DESCRIPTION:In December 2019\, the European Commission presented a framework to make Europe climate neutral by 2050\, entitled the European Green Deal. This set of policy initiatives represents one of the world’s most progressive decarbonisation frameworks and has rapidly evolved over the last months. The European Commission introduced an EU taxonomy to direct financial flows towards sustainable activities and launched a Fit for 55 Package with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. Moreover\, the objective of becoming climate neutral was laid down in the European Climate Law\, and EU Member States were asked to support European Green Deal objectives with their recovery funds. \nIn this session\, renowned economist Prof. Phoebe Koundouri will lead a discussion among experts from policy\, innovation\, and finance to explore the opportunities and challenges of the European Green Deal\, for Europe and the rest of the world. The conversation will be guided by the following questions: \n• What are the main elements of the European Green Deal and how can this framework be used in other regions?\n• What impact will the Green Deal have on the global level?\n• What are the main challenges ahead in implementing the European Green Deal? What can other regions learn from this?\n• What is the impact of the European Green Deal on the Agenda 2030? Are the two agendas mutually reinforcing or do they risk competing with each other?\n• How can the European Green Deal address international spillover effects?\n• What role does policy\, innovation\, and finance play in implementing this framework for counties and for Europe as a whole? \nTarget audience\nThe event is targeted at a global audience interested in sustainable development\, from academia\, government\, civil society and the private sector. It will form part of the International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD)\, which in 2020 welcomed 1\,738 participants from 149 countries. \nModerator:\n• Phoebe Koundouri\, Chair of SDSN Europe and the European Green Deal Senior Working Group \nInvited Speakers:\n• Mary Ritter\, International Ambassador at EIT Climate-KIC\n• Mr. Ketan Patel\, CEO Greater Pacific Capital\n• Laura Piovesan\, Director of the Sustainability & Quality Management Department at European Investment Bank (EIB)\n• Antoine Oger\, Head of Global Challenges and SDGs Team at Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)

SUMMARY:Fixing the Business of Food: Private Sector Alignment with the SDGs and Accountability to Achieve Food Systems Transformation
DESCRIPTION:The global food system must be fundamentally transformed to operate within planetary boundaries and to enable human wellbeing. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize the vital role of companies in achieving the goals\, including mitigating the sector’s harmful impacts on human and planetary health and supporting broader SDG achievement. \nCurrent sustainability frameworks\, standards\, reporting\, and certifications do not sufficiently support or measure SDG alignment of the food sector; indeed\, even as corporate sustainability efforts increase\, corporate alignment with the SDGs continues to face fundamental challenges. \nThis session will take stock of a range of initiatives to support SDG alignment of food companies\, and to promote the rigorous discussion\, assessment\, reporting and action that is needed to support the necessary transformations. \nIt is in this spirit that we invite all food companies that are ready to play their part in contributing to transforming the food systems within their sphere of influence\, to join us in this discussion.

SUMMARY:Launch of the Sustainable Development Report 2021
DESCRIPTION:As the world begins its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic\, an emphasis must be placed on sustainable development. It is time to look for transformative pathways\, collaboration amongst UN member-states\, and to use the SDGs as a framework to “build forward better”. \nThe annual Sustainable Development Report (SDR) tracks progress on the SDGs and analyzes key issues in sustainable development. It is written by a group of authors led by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs\, President of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). The SDR synthesizes metrics and data to allow all 193 countries to view how they perform on each SDG. Published by Cambridge University Press\, the report outlines the short-term impacts of COVID-19 on the SDGs and describes how the SDGs can frame the recovery. The 2021 Sustainable Development Report\, which includes the SDG Index and Dashboards\, will be released on June 14\, 2021. \nAgenda (all times in CET) \n14:00 – 14:10 Opening Remarks\nProf. Jeffrey D. Sachs\, President\, UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (lead author) \n14:10 – 14:20 Presentation of key results and findings\nMr. Guillaume Lafortune\, Director of SDSN Paris (co-author) \n14:20 – 14:45 Country statements\nBangladesh (TBC)\nMr. Ville Skinnari\, Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade\, Government of Finland \n14:45-14:55 Closing remarks and outlook\nDr. Christian Kroll\, Co-Author of the Sustainable Development Report \nThis launch event will be facilitated by Ms. Lauren Barredo\, Head of Partnerships\, SDSN
