SUMMARY:Inclusive Societies and Inclusive Institutions Within the EU
DESCRIPTION:As the European Union elections approach\, the SDSN is committed to engaging and mobilizing young Europeans to vote. In this spirit\, and under the leadership of prof. Angelo Riccaboni\, co-chair of SDSN Europe and chair of SDSN Med\, several SDSN Europe-based networks are joining forces to spotlight the remarkable strides made by the EU and its Member States in advancing sustainable development over the recent decades. The SDSN\, in partnership with SDSN Europe\, SDSN Mediterranean\, SDSN Portugal\, and SDSN Germany will host three webinars throughout April and May 2024. \nGiven the upcoming European elections\, this webinar addresses the relevance of inclusive societies and institutions for shaping safe\, just\, and sustainable futures for all. We especially invite youth representatives to share their achievements to contribute to needs-orientated\, inclusive\, participatory\, and representative decision-making processes at all levels and protect fundamental freedoms within the EU. The achievements aim to inspire a broad public to stand up for inclusion and democracy with regard to the elections and beyond. \nHosted by SDSN Germany\, the webinar will feature a keynote speaker and a panel presenting inspiring examples of policies\, projects\, and initiatives that have had a positive impact on our lives and that would not have been there if it were not for the EU. By spotlighting tangible cases and successes\, we seek to highlight the significance of active participation in European elections\, illustrating how each vote contributes to shaping a resilient and enduring European Union. \n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Net Zero: Making the Way Towards a Carbon Neutral Europe
DESCRIPTION:As the European Union elections approach\, the SDSN is committed to engaging and mobilizing young Europeans to vote. In this spirit\, and under the leadership of prof. Angelo Riccaboni\, chair of SDSN Med\, several SDSN Europe-based networks are joining forces to spotlight the remarkable strides made by the EU and its Member States in advancing sustainable development over the recent decades. The SDSN\, in partnership with SDSN Europe\, SDSN Mediterranean\, SDSN Portugal\, and SDSN Germany will host three webinars throughout April and May 2024. \nThe EU aims to be climate-neutral by 2050 – an economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. This objective is at the heart of the European Green Deal and is a legally binding target thanks to the European Climate Law. This webinar invites the participants\, especially young people\, to “visit” some initiatives aiming to contribute to this objective and\, in this way\, to keep Europe as one of the better places to live. The achievements aim to inspire the European Youth to be active in acting for a carbon-neutral Europe\, therefore contributing to saving the Planet. \nHosted by SDSN Portugal\, the webinar will feature a keynote speaker and a panel presenting inspiring examples of policies\, projects\, and initiatives that have had a positive impact on our lives and that would not have been there if it were not for the EU. By spotlighting tangible cases and successes\, we seek to highlight the significance of active participation in European elections\, illustrating how each vote contributes to shaping a resilient and enduring European Union. \n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Connecting European Citizens: Student Mobility Across the EU
\nMobility is one of the keys for the European Higher Education Area\, which stresses the importance of investing in human capital to boost economic development and internationalization. For this reason\, the EU supports and reinforces mobility through the Erasmus Programme. Launched in 1987\, it gave the possibility to 3\,200 students from different European countries to embark upon this pioneering experience. Today more than twelve million participants have enjoyed the programme in its 37 years of life. \nHosted by SDSN Mediterranean\, the webinar will feature a keynote speaker and a panel presenting inspiring examples of policies\, projects\, and initiatives that have had a positive impact on our lives and that would not have been there if it were not for the EU. By spotlighting tangible cases and successes\, we seek to highlight the significance of active participation in European elections\, illustrating how each vote contributes to shaping a resilient and enduring European Union. \n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:WHO webinar on Environmental Health Inequalities
DESCRIPTION:Environmental conditions are a major determinant of health and well-being\, but they are not the same for everyone everywhere. Inequalities in environmental risk are interlinked with almost all environmental challenges\, including exposure to air pollution\, noise\, inadequate housing\, energy and water supply\, climate change\, or lack of access to nature. \n\nIn this context\, WHO (European Region) is organizing a webinar\, which will be held also on the occasion of Human Rights Day (Dec 10). It will provide an introduction to the environment as a human right\, present data on urban environmental health inequalities in Europe\, and review the coverage of environmental equity aspects in national action on sustainable development. \n\nThe event will be in English with simultaneous Russian translation. Participation is at no cost. \n\nRegistration here

SUMMARY:Sustainable agri-food systems as a lever for climate neutrality and food security: the role of partnership and cooperation in research and innovation
DESCRIPTION:Background \nFood systems are central to the global economic and social debate. This is due to their impact on climate change and biodiversity loss\, the economic\, social\, and cultural importance of the sector\, and the effects of nutrition on the well-being and health of individuals and societies. Food systems transversally affect the SDGs\, impacting seemingly distant goals such as zero poverty\, good health\, or climate action. The war in Ukraine and climate extremes are turning this situation into an international food crisis and a lack of food accessibility\, particularly among the most vulnerable groups. \nAll these complexities and challenges are even more severe in the Mediterranean region\, which is a hot spot for climate change and whose Countries are highly dependent on the import of wheat. This session during COP27 at Meditteranean Pavillion will discuss the importance of research and innovation in addressing the food emergency in the Mediterranean area\, as well as cooperation and partnerships among all stakeholders comprising food systems in enhancing and implementing solutions. \nLineup \nLead organization: PRIMA  \nSession coordinator:\nAngelo Riccaboni\, Co-chair of SDSN Europe\, Chair of SDSN Mediterranean\, and Chair of PRIMA\nGiovanni Stanghellini\, UNISI \nKeynote speaker: Jeffrey Sachs\, President of the SDSN \nPanelists:\nHeba Al Hariry\, FAO NENA Regional Office\nJohn Bell\, Director Healthy Planet\, DG Research and Innovation at European Commission\nStefano Gatti\, Special Envoy for Food Security of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation\nArianna Giuliodori\, Secretary General WFO\nPhoebe Kondouri\, Co-Chair SDSN Europe \nFinal remarks: Mohamed ElShinawi\, Co-Chair PRIMA Foundation \n  \nPanelists will be composed of the representatives of the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation\, FAO\, European Commission\, and SDSN Europe. \nJoin the Event \nThe event will take place in Med Pavillion at COP27 and Online. SUMMARY:The Clock is Ticking: Leveraging the SDGs in a World of Crises
DESCRIPTION:A joint event by the European Parliament’s SDG Alliance and UNDP \nConcept\n\nWith less than 8 years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, and no country on track to achieve them\, and as the mid-point of Agenda 2030 approaches\, this event aims to take stock of the EU and the international community’s implementation of the SDGs. In a world where geopolitical\, climate and humanitarian crises compete for resources and policy-makers’ attention\, this event aims to answer the following question: are the SDGs relevant in such a context\, and if so\, how can this operationalised?\nThis event is particularly timely. On June 23rd\, the European Parliament will\, for the first time this mandate\, vote on a resolution assessing the EU’s implementation of the SDGs. This resolution makes concrete recommendations for making the SDGs a reality in Europe and beyond\, given current challenges. \nIn July\, the international community will reunite in person\, for the first time in 3 years\, for the 2022 High Level Political Forum. As such\, now is the moment to crystallise expectations for this forum: what role will the EU play? What new commitments will be made? Will the SDGs become collateral damage of a world in crises\, or will they be taken seriously as the only framework for emerging from these crises? \nLineup\n\n15:00 – 15:05 Opening remarks by MEP Barry Andrews\, Chair of SDG Alliance\n15:05 – 15:20 Address by Achim Steiner\, UNDP Administrator\n                       Address by Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim\, UN SDG Advocate\n15:20 – 15:35 Panel discussion with experts:\nEach speaker to make 2-3 minute individual address \nCamilla Brückner\, Director of UN/UNDP Office\, Brussels\nMichael Koehler\, Director-General\, DG ECHO\nFelix Fernández Shaw\, Director for Sustainable Development Policy and Coordination\, DG INTPA\nAdolf Kloke-Lesch\, co-chair\, SDSN Europe \n15:35 – 15:50 Moderated discussion\, chaired by MEP Anna Cavazzini\n15:50 – 15:58 Q&A session\n15:58 – 16:00 Closing remarks by MEP Barry Andrews \n\nThe event will take place in European Parliament\, Brussels (Room: ASP 1E2) and Online. SUMMARY:The SDGs in Times of Crises
DESCRIPTION:After two years of pandemic\, in the midst of the new armed conflict and geopolitical tension as well as an inflation and debt crisis\, pursuing the 2030 Agenda with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the global climate goals has become less relevant for some observers. For others\, refocusing on these goals will help not only to address some of the root causes of the crises we currently face but will also help regain common ground between nations. \nThe online event of SDSN Europe\, organized in the framework of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development\, will discuss the importance of the SDGs in times of crises and the role of Europe in achieving them. The event will feature European and global leaders and will address a broad audience of policy makers as well as actors from business\, academia\, and civil society. \nThe discussion will revolve around key questions\, including: \n\nHow to maintain consistent\, high-level focus on achieving the SDGs at a global level without being overwhelmed by the crises of the moment?\nHow to ensure that efforts to resolve current crises also lead to positive transformation on key sustainable development challenges? and\nHow can collective transnational efforts to resolve current crises help build momentum for a more cooperative international environment for achieving the SDGs?\n\nSpeakers will include: \n\nEnrico Giovannini\, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy\nDirk Messner\, President of the German Environment Agency\nMarkus H.-P. Müller\, Managing Director\, Global Head of Chief Investment Office Private Bank at Deutsche Bank \nPeter Schmidt\, President NAT Section\, European Economic and Social Committee (EESC)\nMassamba Thioye\, Project Executive UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub at UN Climate Change\nJeffrey Sachs\, President of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network\n\nThe discussion will be opened by Angelo Riccaboni\, Director of the School and Co-Chair of SDSN Europe and will be moderated by the co-chairs of SDSN Europe – Adolf Kloke-Lesch and Phoebe Koundouri. \nThe event will take place via Zoom and Youtube Livestream. Register here for Zoom Webinar or Watch the livestream.

SUMMARY:Feb. 2nd : Joint implementation of the Agenda 2030 and the European Green Deal: Transformations for a sustainable recovery from COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 2022 UN-ECOSOC Partnership Forum\, to be held on 2 February 2022\, SDSN Europe and SDSN Greece co-organize a side event. \nThe European Green Deal\, introduced in December 2019 by the European Commission\, aims to make Europe climate-neutral\, resource-efficient\, innovative\, and socially inclusive. Therefore\, the European Leadership has committed to including both in the European Semester\, the alignment process of Member States’ budget and economic policy with the rules agreed at the EU level\, and in the Strategic guidelines on various Policy areas\, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030\, a globally accepted pledge for poverty eradication and sustainable development\, which considers three pillars– economic\, social\, and environmental. Moreover\, the EU has responded to the pandemic’s consequences on health\, environment\, and economy with a generous “Next Generation EU” package of funds and mobilizing policies\, to support the economic recovery\, while pursuing Europe’s green and digital transition. \nThroughout this session\, the participants will examine how the joint implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda 2030 and the European Green Deal could promote the recovery from the COVID-19 consequences\, sustainably. \nFebruary 02\, 2022\, 1:00 PM–1:50 PM EST

DESCRIPTION:This webinar will feature the launch of the 2021 Europe Sustainable Development Report (3rd edition) prepared by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) in partnership with SDSN Europe and the Institute for a European Environmental Policy (IEEP). The report co-designed with civil society\, provides an overview of the European Union performance and trajectories on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by all UN Member States in 2015. It includes detailed country profiles for all EU Member States and partner countries – including for the first time EU candidate countries. This year’s edition includes two thematic chapters: The EU Recovery and the SDGs; and Transforming the Agri-Food Sector for Achieving the SDGs. As for previous editions\, the report underlines SDGs priorities inside the EU but also the need to leverage diplomacy and to address negative spillovers embodied into unsustainable supply chains in order to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs and Paris Climate Agreement. This event will bring together various experts and practitioners to discuss key priorities and transformations to achieve the SDGs inside and outside the EU and how to get it done in the face of the pandemic.

SUMMARY:Implementing the European Green Deal Through Transformational Change: A review of EU Climate Action through the Lens of the "Six Transformations"
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Enel Foundation will present their study on how to effectively implement the European Green Deal in full consistency with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, and will show the successful case study of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan. \nTo live up to the ambition of tackling the urgent climate and environmental crisis\, while pursuing economic growth and respecting the Leave No One Behind principle\, the European Green Deal should be implemented according to a holistic and cross-sectoral pattern in deep synergy with the SDGs policies. Adopting the Six Transformations approach\, developed among others by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs in 2019\, aimed at providing a model for policymakers to address multiple SDGs while minimizing potential trade-offs\, this study put forward policy recommendations to ensure that the European Green Deal is applied in full coherence with the SDGs. \nThe case study of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan shows how energy and climate action can be successfully operationalised within the Six Transformation framework and in line with the European Green Deal’s objectives. In fact\, if properly implemented\, the Mission of the “Green Revolution and Ecological Transition” in the Plan will have manifold positive spill-over effects in several policy fields\, such as a net increase in jobs in the energy sector. Finally\, the Italian example can guide other countries wishing to develop a holistic strategy aligned with multiple objectives and goals.
